FILM INFO: This 2008 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar® nominee is a Russian remake of the American classic 12 Angry Men. The basic plot points are the same; twelve jurors must decide the fate of a Chechen teenager accused of murder, and while the case seems simple, one man takes a stand against the other eleven with his vote of “not guilty” igniting a discussion about the guilt of the accused beyond a reasonable doubt. Included in this jury are a racist taxi-driver, a suspicious doctor, a vacillating TV producer, a Holocaust survivor, a flamboyant musician, a cemetery manager, and others who represent the fragmented society of modern day Russia. What unfolds during the jurors’ discussion is the story not only of the accused and his circumstances, but also of the jurors’ own back stories, preconceptions, and prejudices. [2007, Runtime: 159 min., Rated PG-13]
